Rising damp can be a real issue when it comes to building. Luckily with the right preparation and materials, it can be easily prevented.

There are two main types of damp proofing used in construction, a damp proof course (DPC) and a damp proof membrane (DPM).

A DPC is a polythene sheeting which is often used as a horizontal barrier against moisture. It is built into the wall of a house at foundation level.

A DPM has a similar role to a DPC but is used beneath a concrete floor to prevent damp rising up from the ground.

Once it is installed, a layer of insulation is usually added, with the concrete being poured on top.
